Old Mine started unconventionally, with its beginnings in Brooklyn bars and backyards. Hugh Ashcraft, a bartender with a knack for building, found himself at a crossroads when the world closed in 2020. Behind his Williamsburg apartment, the self-taught craftsman began taking on projects for friends—and friends of friends—to construct decks, furniture, and kitchen islands. A business was born, and as the work grew more refined, so did Hugh’s interest in precision-driven interiors and cabinetry.

In 2021, Hugh’s longtime friend Charlotte Doherty came aboard, bringing a robust background in design and business management that helped shape the venture’s next chapter. With demand on the rise, Hugh and Charlotte departed the tight confines of their Brooklyn workshop for Kerhonkson, a town in New York’s Hudson Valley. They landed on Old Mine Road, one of the oldest trading routes in the American Northeast—and the name stuck.

Today, Old Mine operates out of a 4,000-square-foot workshop with a state-of-the-art, in-house finishing facility. Through a clear and collaborative process, the team partners with leading architects and designers—and with discerning homeowners seeking tailored, hands-on service—to translate vision into reality, producing custom cabinetry and millwork that is both functional and timeless.

Hugh built the operation that would become Old Mine from the ground up, with his big-picture thinking and exacting eye for detail shaping the shop’s driving ethos. Under Hugh’s direction, Old Mine has grown from a solo practice into a full-scale design/build operation. Charlotte Doherty

OPERATIONS DIRECTOR
Charlotte has been with the company since its early days. A woodworker with a background in design and business management, she leads project scheduling, budgeting and production with a clear understanding of the craft. Avrom Tobin

SHOP FOREMAN
With years as a foreman in both construction and millwork shops, Avrom brings sharp problem-solving and leadership to Old Mine’s floor. Trained as a furnituremaker at the North Bennet Street School, his award-winning work is recognized industry-wide. At Old Mine, Avrom oversees fabrication with a steady hand, moving seamlessly between build support, quality control, product research, and finishing. avrom@oldminecarpentry.com
Ryan Bennett

FINISHING DIRECTOR
A native of Missouri, Ryan has been with the shop since its days in Brooklyn, and relocated to the Hudson Valley alongside Old Mine in 2021. As one of the shop’s longest-running employees, he has had a hand in many of Old Mine’s most significant projects. Ryan’s innate drive toward perfection and excellence ensure that each project leaves the finishing room in flawless condition.
